Book, BenchPosted: March 31, 2015
There is a park bench on a ground-tile mosaic in Precita Park, a few blocks from where I stay in San Francisco. The small space, tiles and bench on a small plateau that fades down to the grassy lawn, is a memorial to Carlos Hernandez and Sylvia Menendez, two teenagers who were shot and killed in the park on June 24th, 1996, a Sunday afternoon. June 24th is also my birthday.
I mashed up a bunch of things into the book: writings about the history of the park, archived reporting of the murder by local media at the time, and essays on civic/public/common spaces including Plutarch’s telling of Theseus’s unification of Attica, with documentation of the flora, fauna, and surrounding public space of the park in Spring 2015.
